A major chipmaker is getting a lot of love on Wall Street — and no, it's not Nvidia . Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company posted third-quarter results Thursday that topped analysts' expectations. While the company reported its largest profit decline since 2019, it signaled a looming end to a difficult inventory correction. The Taiwan-based semiconductor company plays an integral role in the attention-grabbing artificial intelligence chipmaking industry, supplying products to Apple , Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices . However, now may mark an opportune time for long-term investors to get into a company poised to experience mid- to high-teens growth in 2024.

The reduction in existing mortgage rates will come amid several other property, economic and market support measures Beijing has announced over the past few weeks, as concerns mount about the health of the world's second-largest economy. Chinese lenders were widely expected to cut interest rates on existing mortgages after the PBOC earlier this month said that it would guide commercial banks to do so. The central bank's proposal to cut rates, which came after a wave of early repayments of mortgage debt, aims to reduce the interest rate costs for homebuyers and to boost consumption in a slowing economy. Adjusting existing mortgage rates is conducive to easing pressure on banks from mortgage prepayment, Lin Li, vice president of Agricultural Bank of China Ltd (601288.SS), the country's No.3 lender by assets, said earlier on Tuesday. Cutting deposit rates could help banks to maintain a proper level of NIM, one of the sources said.

Another blowout quarter from artificial intelligence giant Nvidia should bode well for shares of this derivative play, according to Bank of America. Analyst Brad Lin lifted his price target on U.S.-listed shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing to $125, representing 35% upside from Thursday's close. He cited "sustainable and strong" demand for AI products, which should meaningfully benefit the leading AI chipmaker and maker of edge nodes and advanced packaging. So far this year, shares of Taiwan Semiconductor have jumped about 23%, while Nvidia shares have more than doubled. Lin views Taiwan Semiconductor's valuation as attractive at nearly 14 times price-to-earnings and near the lower end of its historical range.

Caterpillar shares turn around CAT YTD mountain Caterpillar YTD Dow component Caterpillar delivered a blowout first quarter. Caterpillar revenue in Q1 increased 16.7% year over year to $15.86 billion, exceeding estimates of $15.26 billion, according to Refinitiv. Better-than-expected operating margin of 17% was so strong, due mostly to manufacturing costs that were not as high as expected as well as higher prices. Bottom Line on CAT This was a very strong quarter from Caterpillar as business continues to benefit from pricing power that outweighs costs. Even with oil down in the quarter, Caterpillar continues to see a lot of activity and strength in new engine sales to customers.
SHANGHAI/SINGAPORE, April 19 (Reuters) - China is widely expected to stand pat on lending benchmarks at the monthly fixing on Thursday, a Reuters survey showed, as economic recovery has been well on track - as seen from better-than-expected first-quarter data. China's economy grew at a faster-than-expected pace in the first quarter, reducing the urgency for authorities to ease monetary policy to aid recovery, traders and economists said. The loan prime rate (LPR), which banks normally charge their best clients, is calculated each month after 18 designated commercial banks submit proposed rates to the People's Bank of China (PBOC). In a poll of 30 market watchers, 27 predicted no change to either the one-year LPR or five-year tenor . The interest rate on medium-term lending facility (MLF) loans serves as a guide to the LPR.
BENGALURU, April 5 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee, one of the worst-performing Asian currencies last year, will fall further in the coming months and is expected to drift back to trade around where it is now in 12 months, according to a Reuters poll of FX strategists. Median forecasts from 40 respondents to a March 31-April 4 Reuters poll showed the rupee trading at 82.40/dollar by the end of the month and 82.55/dollar by the end of June. However, a fifth of respondents forecast the currency will change hands at 82.90/dollar or weaker as early as next month. A strong majority of poll respondents who answered an additional question, 13 of 16, said risks to their forecast were skewed towards the rupee being even weaker over the next month. "A key driver of the Indian rupee will continue to be the RBI's FX intervention strategy," noted Lin Li, head of global markets research Asia at MUFG.
It's been a tough start to 2023 for shareholders of Linde (LIN). Russia freezing Linde assets First off, while U.S. markets were closed to observe the New Year holiday, Reuters reported Monday that a Russian court froze about $488 million of Linde assets. The legal action was at the request of a Russian joint venture that Linde stopped working on. Long story short, Linde was prepaid $1.8 billion for work on a project, and Russian energy giant Gazprom is suing Linde to get that money back. Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, Linde suspended business in Russia and announced plans to scale back operations.
December is the month for eating all the cookies

Editor’s Note: Food writer Casey Barber says December is the month for baking cookies. Freezing cookies can also help save time in the long run by allowing you to start your holiday baking early. Lin makes cookies weeks in advance of his parties and thaws them at room temperature up to two days before an event. If you are short on timeBar cookies are Lin’s secret weapon when it comes to holiday baking. Many cookies, such as Lin’s red velvet crackle cookies, require that the dough be chilled before portioning and rolling, so it’s key to take that into consideration.
